This article explores the representation of the concept of Eros in postmodern cinema, grounded in the philosophical perspectives of Byung-Chul Han. The primary approach of the study is a critical analysis of Melancholia, directed by Lars von Trier, as a prominent example of the cinematic depiction of existential and emotional crises within the postmodern world. While Eros in classical philosophy symbolized a force of connection and meaningful life, Han argues that in the contemporary condition, it has become fragmented and degenerated. Love, desire, and human longing, under the pressures of today’s consumerist and individualistic order, have collapsed into alienation and detachment.
Using qualitative content analysis and Han’s theoretical framework, this study investigates the manifestations of Eros’s decline in the narrative, characters, and atmosphere of Melancholia. Particular attention is given to the depiction of depression, isolation, and interpersonal rupture, offering insight into the erosion of erotic energy in postmodern culture. The analysis reveals that human relationships in Melancholia are largely devoid of authentic emotional bonds and, in the face of cosmic collapse, devolve into passivity and indifference. The findings suggest that postmodern cinema—especially in the works of directors like von Trier—not only portrays the late condition of love and desire but also critically interrogates the psychological, social, and cultural structures of its time. This study thus provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between cinematic aesthetics and the philosophical transformations of Eros in the postmodern era.
