This article addresses the central question of how Dante Alighieri, in his masterpiece the Divine Comedy, not only reflects the philosophical and theological ideas of Thomas Aquinas but also transforms them into a paradigmatic model of artistic embodiment. Employing comparative textual analysis and hermeneutics, the study argues that the Divine Comedy is not merely a versified digest of scholastic theology; rather, it is a creative process that dramatizes and renders abstract concepts tangible. The article shows that the precise architecture of the afterlife, the classification of sins and virtues, and the soul’s journey toward God draw directly on Aquinas’s foundational thought. The core of the analysis examines how Aquinas’s aesthetic principles—integrity, proportion, and clarity/radiance—are concretely realized in the very fabric of Dante’s work.
At the same time, the article underscores Dante’s creative innovations: by personalizing the narrative, adding psychological realism, and crafting a “lived experience” for the audience, he moves beyond a purely didactic framework and gives flesh and blood to the skeleton of Aquinas’s thought. Ultimately, the study presents the Dante–Aquinas model as an enduring paradigm for contemporary artists and thinkers who seek to give artistic expression to profound concepts in a world confronted with a crisis of meaning.
With that said, the article emphasizes Dante’s creative innovations. By dramatizing abstract ideas, personalizing the narrative through his own experiences and political concerns, and creating a lived experience for the audience, he transcends a merely didactic frame and gives flesh and blood to the skeleton of Aquinas’s thought. In the end, this study introduces the Dante–Aquinas model as a lasting framework for contemporary artists and thinkers striving to articulate profound ideas artistically in a world facing a crisis of meaning. This model demonstrates how one can strike an effective balance between intellectual depth and artistic appeal.
