In Iranian civilization and culture, guild treatises and fatwatnamehs, as focal documents, reflect the epistemological system governing traditional crafts, explaining hierarchical structures, guild customs, and traditional mechanisms for knowledge transfer. In this guild system, job ranks and master-disciple relationships are defined based on chivalrous conduct (fatwat); in such a way that technical progress is necessarily a function of spiritual perfection and commitment to ethical principles. Among them, the “Fatwatnameh of the Builders” is an unparalleled document that specifically addresses the profession of architecture and construction. This document specifies and documents the internal system, job hierarchy (from laborer to master), and spiritual rules governing the guild of architects and builders in the masonry profession, and is the main focus of the present study. This document specifically and comprehensively deals with the details of the masonry and construction profession, explaining the hierarchical structures, the etiquette of entering the guild, the master-disciple relationship, and the ethical and spiritual principles governing guild relations. This treatise is not only a technical manual, but also an internal code of conduct for the guild administration, which opens a unique window into the worldview and professional lifestyle of builders and architects and provides a framework for a deeper understanding of the social and cultural position of construction among other professions.
Accordingly, the main goal of this article is to understand the hierarchical structure and guild rules of builders based on the text of the "Fututnameh of Builders". The theoretical framework of the article is also formed by Henry Corbin's thought on young men and the ritual of Futu. He considers the mystical and spiritual aspects of young men and guilds of Futu to be colorful and meaningful, which influences the profession. In his opinion,
A young man is someone who is the perfect embodiment of young men and the transition from martial chivalry to mysticism. However, a young man who is engaged in a profession becomes a desirable example. The profession of someone who joins the Futuat, whatever profession it may be, becomes a kind of service of chivalry.
Statement of the problem: How does the Futuat-nameh of Banyan define the guild hierarchy (from mercenary to master) as a guild system? The aim of this article is to explain the hierarchical structure and guild rules of Banyan based on the text of the Futuat-nameh of Banyan. This research is descriptive-analytical with a qualitative approach and the data were collected using a library/documentary method. The findings indicate that the Futotnameh of Banyan stages the guild hierarchy, in addition to technical skill, as a spiritual journey in which promotion from the status of "laborer" to "master" requires going through specific rituals and proving moral competence alongside professional ability
